This is a US Model 1819 pistol manufactured by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut. Between 1819 and 1823 North produced 20,400 of these .54 caliber smoothbore pistols. The pistol has an overall length of 15 1/2", with a 10" round barrel. These pistols were finished with all the iron furniture brown, but this one has an overall steel gray patina. The exterior of the barrel has a smooth surface with no pitting. This one has been converted to percussion using a threaded breech plug. The bottom of the barrel and breech plug are stamped are both stamped with the number 29. Also stamped on the bottom of the barrel and in the barrel channel of the stock are the Roman numerals XVI. There are no visible stamps or marks on the exterior of the barrel. The front brass blade sight is still present, there is no longer a rear sight present. The bore gauges at .55 caliber and is beginning to turn dark with very light surface rust. The swivel type steel ramrod with button head is still with this old horse pistol, this model being the first to incorporate the captured ramrod of this style. The iron barrel band has a distinctive lip indicative of this model, retained by a long narrow spring. All the iron hardware, barrel band, side plate, trigger guard, butt cap and back strap have the same matching steel gray patina as the barrel. The mechanics of the lock work perfectly. These locks were originally marked S. NORTH in a downward curve over an American eagle and shield motif with the letters U and S on either side. Below the eagle was MIDLtn CONN. in an upward curve. All that remains of these markings is a faint outline of the eagle, the U, S and M, ONN. The original sliding safety is still present, indicating this was a US martial arm. The walnut stock is in very good condition, showing the normal dings and bumps from normal handling. There are no cracks in the wood, all edges and barrel channels are very crisp. A single oval inspector's cartouche is visible on the left side flat, but I can't make out the initials. This US Model 1819 pistol remains in very good condition, and will make a nice addition to any early US martially marked pistol collection.
