This is a percussion, half stock, heavy barreled target rifle from the mid 1800's time period. It has an overall length of 47 1/2", with a barrel length of 31 1/2". The exterior of the barrel has a smooth, non pitted surface, with a plum patina. The bore gages out at .44 caliber and is turning dark with light surface rust. The barrel is not stamped or marked in any way. The octagon barrel is fitted with a brass blade front sight, a buckhorn style rear sight set 7 1/4" forward of the breech and provisions for a removable sight on the barrel tang. The lock plate is not stamped with a name. The barrel is retained by a single escutcheon and one tang screw. The ramrod pipes are secured to the bottom of the barrel. The ramrod is missing in action. The mechanics of the lock work fine. The double triggers work perfectly as well. The lock has some simple engraving applied to it. The butt plate, patch box and trigger guard are all iron and have a black, out of the attic patina. The remaining hardware, escutcheon plates, plaque on the underside of the stock, and nose cap are all brass with a silver coating applied. On the right side of the stock is a simple patch box, most likely used to store extra caps. The left side of the stock has a hunter and dog applied to the stock. The stock shows plenty of use, with holes in the bottom of the fore hand similar to that observed on weapons with "saddle" wear. It also shows repairs to a crack in the wrist area, but the stock is still very solid. This is a decent example of a mid 1800's target rifle that could possibly went out west and used as a buffalo gun at one time.
