This is a percussion, half stock, heavy barreled target rifle from the mid 1800's time period. It has an overall length of 50", with a barrel length of 33". The exterior of the barrel has smooth, non pitted surface, with a plum patina mixed with original bluing. The bore gages out at .40 caliber and is turning dark with light surface rust. The barrel is stamped L. COON/CAST STEEL/PATENT for Levi Coon of Ithaca, New York. The American Gun Makers text shows him in business in 1821 as a maker of Kentucky flintlock rifles. His son, Levi Jr, is also listed as a maker of percussion sporting rifles. This target rifle is most likely a product of Levi Coon Jr. The octagon barrel is fitted with a brass blade front sight and an adjustable rear sight. The lock plate is stamped with the name of C. Baker, listed as being unlocated and being used on percussion sporting rifles. The barrel is retained by a single escutcheon and one tang screw. The ramrod pipes are secured to the bottom of the barrel. The wooden ramrod is cupped on one end, but has no brass tip. The mechanics of the lock work fine. The double triggers work perfectly as well. The lock and hammer have some simple engraving applied to each piece. The butt plate and trigger guard are brass that have been coated in German silver. The remaining hardware, escutcheon plates, plaque on the underside of the stock, ornate side plate and six inlays are all made of German silver. On the right side of the stock are a five pointed star and a hunter with fowling piece and dog inlays. The left side of the stock has squirrel and waterfowl inlay. The stock is in good condition, but does show repairs to a crack in the wrist area. A pewter nose cap is used one the end of the stock. This is a nice example of mid 1800's craftsmanship used in the making of an early target rifle.
