This is a hand made cast iron signal cannon from the 1800's. The carriage measures 12 1/2" long, 9 1/2" wide and 8" tall. The cannon barrel is made of cast iron and is 14 1/2" long, 1" across the muzzle and has a 5/8" bore. Unfortunately somebody got a little over zealous and packed just a bit to much powder in the little howitzer and blew the barrel out! A section of the barrel 3 3/4" long and approximately 1/2" wide is missing from the right side of the barrel. The left side is peeled open about 4 1/2" long, both problems occuring at the breech plug. Supporting the carriage are two wooden wheels measuring 10" in height. The carriage is built using two pieces of oak and tying it all together with square head bolts and nuts. What appears to be a railroad spike supports the barrel in the rear. A cast iron hitch pivots on the rear of the carriage, also retained by the same square cast iron components. The wooden wheels are retained by large square nails. Even though the barrel is ruptured, this thing has cool display power! This cannon comes out of the north Georgia area, but that's all the history I know on it.
