This is a wooden Jingasa helmet used by the Japanese Samurai during the Edo period, between 1603 and 1868. The samurai wore the lightweight Jingasa while traveling or when in a camp setting. This one is made of wood and has a black lacquer finish on the outside, with the interior of the helmet having a red lacquer finish. A family Mon, or crest, is done in gold leaf on the front of the helmet. There are no cracks or wood loss anywhere on the helmet, just some minor chipping of the lacquer around the rim of the helmet. The interior of the rim has some small areas of the red lacquer flaking off, and one or to small chips. The cloth head pad and padded chin strap are missing from the helmet. The helmet has a diameter of 16 1/4". This Jingasa helmet is from the late Edo period, somewhere between the 1840's and the 1860's. It has some awesome display power and great eye appeal!
