This is a US Model 1942 porcelain coated canteen from World War II. These canteens were made of low grade metal and coated with a porcelain enamel in an attempt to conserve the more valuable aluminum and stainless steel for aircraft and vehicle construction. This process began and ended in 1942 with less than favorable results. The US Army and Marine Corps reported that the coating was prone to chipping and contaminating the drinking water within the canteen. These canteens and their cups soon took on a well used appearance due to the chipped coating. They were quickly phased out of the military inventory, though many survived to become quite collectible. There were five companies that manufactured approximately 5 million of the porcelain coated canteens, the REP Co., Vollrath Mfg. Co., Singer Mfg. Co, United States Stoneware Co. and the Be Company. This example was manufactured by the REP Company. The canteen carrier is unmarked and in good condition. The wire bail is present and both snaps were fine. There is a small tears on the bottom of the carrier. This one has no maker stamps or date. The black porcelain canteen is in very good condition, with no dents anywhere. The cap is still secured by the original chain and threads onto the body of the canteen perfectly. There is one small spot on the front of the canteen where the enamel has chipped off and the exposed metal has rusted. The back of the canteen also has a small spot of exposed, rusted metal where the enamel is missing. The bottom of the canteen is where the most enamel is missing. One large and two small spots of exposed metal have rust on the bottom. Fortunately the makers stamp is clearly visible. It is stamped in white lettering U.S./REP/1942. The only detractor is that there is no matching cup. If you are a serious WWII field gear collector your collection isn't complete without one of these!
