Signature of John W Geary

This is the signature block of John White Geary, a Union General during the Civil War. Geary led a very remarkable life. He was born 30 December, 1819 and died 8 February, 1873. He 6' 6" tall and weighed 260 pounds, a giant among men during that time period. He served in the Mexican War as a Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He led that regiment at the battle of Chapulltepac, where he was wounded five times. During his military he would be wounded at least times. When the Civil War Geary raised the 147th and 28th Pennsylvania Infantry regiments. He became the regimental commander of the 28th Pennsylvania. He was wounded and captured near Leesburg, Virginia 8 March, 1862, but was immediately exchanged. He was promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers and took command of a brigade in Nathaniel Banks's Corps. He was seriously wounded in the arm and leg at the Battle of Cedar Mountain on 9 August, 1862. When he returned to duty on 15 October it was a the Division commander. Geary's Division was heavily engaged at the Battle of Chancellorsville, where he was knocked unconscious by a cannon ball. At Gettysburg Geary's Division occupied a defensive position on Cup's Hill, seeing vicious fighting on the 2nd day of battle. John Geary went on to fight at Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain, the Atlanta Campaign, Sherman's march to the Sea and the Carolina's Campaign. Geary's son Edward died in his arms at the Battle of Wauhatchie at Chattanooga. John Geary ended the war as a Breveted Major General. In addition to his military career Geary was very active in politics. He was the first mayor of San Francisco, California, the third Territorial Governor of Kansas, and the 16th Governor of Pennsylvania. His signature block on this document reads, "Yours Truly/Jno.W.Geary" with his distinctive scroll underneath. This signature block was previously sold by the Horse Soldier.
