This is a wooden storage bench from the 1960's with a hand painted Civil War battle scene from the Battle of Antietam. The bench measures 37" wide, 13 3/4" deep and 17" high. The bench is made of pine and is well constructed. These were popular during the 1960 - 1970's as window bench seats and for storage chests for children's toys. Someone took the time to hand paint a scene from the Antietam battlefield. The front side of the chest depicts a Union commander and his staff along a road. The left side of the chest shows a Union color Sergeant with the American flag and three Infantrymen, one of which looks to be wounded. The right side of the chest has a Union officer with drawn saber waving another American flag, trying to rally his men to attack the Confederates on the other side of the river. There are two more Union Infantrymen with him and a wounded Confederate soldier The back of the chest shows a Confederate artillery position, with one cannon, a Confederate officer and seven Confederate soldiers, one being wounded. A bridge can be seen in the left background, possibly Burnside's bridge. The lid to the chest has an eagle with out stretched wings perched on a shield in the center. An American flag on a staff is on the left of the eagle, while a Confederate flag on a staff to the right. Under the two flags are two hands grasped in a handshake. While this is not a Civil War period piece, it most definitely belongs in a Civil War collection. This thing will sure add a splash of color to your war room!
