This is a Carte de Vista of William Gibson of the 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery. The CDV shows Gibson in a sack coat and under shirt. William Gibson was assigned to Battery G, of the 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery where he would achieve the rank of Sergeant. The image is very clear and has a great contrast with the backing. The corners have been slightly clipped. The back mark is from C.C. Burns & Co. and reads C.C. Burns & Co./Photographers/No. 806 Arch Street/ Philada. Written in pencil below the back mark is "William Gibson Bat G 2nd Pa Art 2 Div 3 Brig 18 Corps and below that the name Milton. The 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery was on garrison duty in the Defences of Washington north of the Potomac River until 27 May, 1864. The moved from garrison duty to Port Royal, Va. and onward to Cold Harbor. The regiment of heavy artillery participated in the Battle of Cold Harbor and the siege of Petersburg. This unit mustered out of service at City Point, Va. on 29 January, 1866 and was discharged at Philadelphia, Pa. on 16 February, 1866. The 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery Regiment suffered 616 casualties during it's time in service, with 5 officers and 221 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded and 5 officers and 385 enlisted dying of disease. This image would make a nice addition to your collection.
